Rain, lightning, relocation of fields and loss of play did not dampen the enthusiasm of the players for the 2011 Australian University Championship Twenty20 Cricket event hosted by the University of Western Australia (UWA) during the week 5-8 December.
UWA made it through to the final as the leading team from pool matches where they met the strong University of Technology Sydney (UTS) team. The match saw UTS start strongly with a solid 83 from David Lowery and 40 from Tim Cummins setting UWA the formidable total of 155 to win.
Early wickets were lost by UWA and at 2-20 after 5 overs the run chase was imposing. Man of the Final Viv Paver came to the crease and single handedly took the game away from UTS with ten towering sizes in his contribution of 91. Viv also took a wicket and a catch whilst in the field. Other UWA players to feature were Justin Gaisford with a quick fire 33 alleviating the pressure on Viv and Captain David Vernon who led the team well all week. David hit the winning runs with a six to seal a memorable victory.
