Background information

The World University Summer Games (WUSG) are held every two years under the banner of the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The WUSG comprises competition in 10 compulsory sports and up to 3 optional sports determined by the host. These events are staged in various cities throughout the world.

The 2009 WUSG was held in Belgrade, Serbia from 1 - 12 July. The compulsory sports contested were Athletics, Basketball, Fencing, Football, Gymnastics - artistic and rhythmic, Swimming, Diving, Water Polo, Tennis, Volleyball. The optional sports contested were Taekwondo and Archery.

Australian University Sport selects teams to represent Australia in the World University Summer Games in consultation with the relevant National Sporting Organisations (NSOs). The Australian Team will compete in the majority of the sports but not necessarily all of them.

Eligibility

To be eligible, competitors must meet the eligibility requirements set out in the AUS Athlete's by-law and anti-doping by-laws. These include:

Australian citizens at least 17 and less than 28* years of age as at 1st January 2009* Must be proceeding towards a diploma or higher at either an Australian or Overseas University/ TAFE or have graduated from one of the above institutions in the year prior to the competition (ie: if the Championship is on 1 July 2009, then the student must have graduated after 1 July 2008).

*Athletes seeking selection in Basketball must be at least 17 and less then 24 years of age on January 1 in the year of the event as per new FISU regulations.
