Bunbury set to host the 2017 Western University Games

The largest university sporting event to be held in Western Australia this year, the 2017 Western University Games, was launched today.

Expected to attract more than 1,200 student-athletes from across Western Australia, the 2017 Western University Games will be held from 2-5 July and will include 18 sports.

Australian University Sport CEO Don Knapp is pleased to see the event return to Bunbury for the second year running.

“Regional university sporting events provide student-athletes with the opportunity to pursue a dual education and sport pathway, which results in both tertiary qualifications and sport participation at all levels of sport across Australia,” Mr Knapp said.

“Sport programs on campus are proven to contribute toward higher levels of student recruitment, retention, completion of study and employability,” Mr Knapp added.

The Games are an ideal opportunity for Healthway to promote a safe drinking message to university student-athletes enrolled in tertiary education.

Drinking alcohol increases the risk of accidents, injuries and health problems.

The “Alcohol. Think Again’ message has resonated extremely well with young people by prompting them to review how much alcohol they drink, including drinking less.

The 2017 Western University Games is one of four Regional Games held simultaneously across Australia, with a range of sports serving as the qualifying competition for the 2017 Australian University Games (24-29 September) on the Gold Coast.

The Western University Games is managed by Australian University Sport, the governing body of university sport in Australia, in partnership with Healthway and presented by Alcohol.Think Again.

The Games relies on the participation of the local community to make up the Mainfreight Unigames volunteer contingent who assist organisers to run the Games.
