2017 FISU 3x3 World University League in China

Monash University and Macquarie University have returned from the 2017 International University Sports Federation (FISU) 3x3 World University League in Xiamen, China.

Held over the weekend of 14-17 September, the event attracted teams who qualified for the League from around the world, with FISU Oceania represented by Monash University (women) and Macquarie University (men).

The Macquarie University men finished sixth overall with a strong performance against the University of Bordeaux (France). The Monash women’s team finished 11th overall and had a great 15-7 win against Universidad Nacional de La Mantanza (Argentina).

Australian University Sport provides student-athletes with the opportunity to immerse themselves in the competitive side of developing sports, including 3x3 basketball.

Australian University Sport CEO Don Knapp said: “A primary aim of Australian University Sport is to enable student-athletes to participate in competitive sport at regional, national and international levels and 3x3 basketball offers all of this and a great student experience through sport,” Mr Knapp said.

“This event pathway activates broader participation at both elite and social levels across our 42 member universities.”

FISU Oceania President Martin Doulton said the event was very significant for FISU as it was the third time an Australian university team had represented the Oceania region as well as their country and university.

"From a FISU Oceania perspective, we are proud of our wonderful ambassadors from Monash University and Macquarie University representing Australia and also Lincoln University representing New Zealand. We look forward to many more opportunities for our student-athletes from Oceania to grace the world university sport stage," Mr Doulton said.

In the men's division, Macquarie University rallied against McGill University (Canada) - the reigning champions from last year’s competition - but weren’t able to take the win with a 20-12 lose, finishing in the top half of the men’s competition.

It was the first time the four student-athletes from Macquarie represented their university at an international sporting event. They received their tickets to China after being named national champions at the FISU Oceania 3x3 World University League Qualifying Final on the Gold Coast in August.

Kim Guerin, Director of Campus Life at Macquarie University said: "Macquarie University are proud of the teams' achievements in Xiamen, China, exceeding their entry ranking and out performing expectation. Their professionalism and drive to succeed shone throughout the tournament and we look forward to continuing to support the team to balance their academics and sporting aspirations."
