Australian University Games back in Adelaide

Australian University Sport (AUS) along with the South Australian Minister for Tourism the Honourable Jane Lomax Smith are pleased to announce that Adelaide will once again play host to the Australian University Games.

“I’m delighted that South Australia will host the Australian University Games (AUG) in both 2012 and 2018,” said Dr Lomax-Smith.

The AUG is Australia’s largest annual multi sport event; it will bring over 5,000 participants per event for the 28 sport, five day competition.  The event contributes well in excess of $10 million to the local economy.

“The program of events will take place across Adelaide and will utilise our world-class sporting facilities including the West Lakes Rowing Course and the new State Aquatic Centre,” said Dr Lomax Smith.

Australian University Sport President, Professor Richard Larkins, said he is excited about bringing the Australian University Games to South Australia.

“We have received a pleasing level of support and encouragement from Events South Australia, and have every confidence that Adelaide can provide top class sporting facilities, and an aesthetically pleasing environment in which to host the more than 5,000 interstate student-athletes who will participate in the iconic Australian University Games,” Professor Richard Larkins said.

“South Australia is a great sporting State, and the AUG is a great sporting event – this should make for a very successful Games formula.”

For AUS it caps a very successful period of negotiation for the Games.  This deal signifies the third multi event deal with a state event organisation and sees the event almost completely secured through until 2018.  Host cities for the Games over the coming years include:

  • 2010 – Perth, WA
  • 2011 – Gold Coast, Qld
  • 2012 – Adelaide, SA
  • 2013 – Gold Coast, Qld
  • 2014 – Not secured
  • 2015 – Gold Coast, Qld
  • 2016 – Perth, WA
  • 2017 – Not secured
  • 2018 – Adelaide, SA
