The University of Newcastle established sport scholarships to encourage and support students with demonstrated sporting ability and potential contribution to the sporting achievements of the University. 

The purpose of these scholarships is to improve the quality of University sporting teams and to establish a standard of excellence to complement the University's academic achievements.

Up to eight scholarships are offered annually.  Seven scholarships are funded by the University of Newcastle (to the value of $1500) and one scholarship is funded by the Friends of the University (to the value of $2000).
