World University Winter Games

Torino, Italy January 2007

Background:

The Winter Universiade is held every two years under the banner of the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The Winter Universiade comprises competition in 10 compulsory sports and some optional sports determined by the host. These events are staged in various cities throughout the world.

Tour dates and Event details:

In 2007, the Winter Universiade will be held in Torino, Italy in January 2007 (specific dates to be confirmed). The sports to be contested are Alpine Skiing, Snowboard, Cross Country Skiing, Ski Jumping, Nordic Combined, Biathlon, Ice Hockey, Skeleton, Figure Skating, and Short Track Speed Skating (program is to be confirmed).

Selections:

Australian University Sport (AUS) selects teams to represent Australia in the Winter Universiade in consultation with the relevant National Sporting Organisations (NSOs). The Australian team will compete in the majority of the sports but not necessarily all of them. The size of the Winter Universiade team selected is variable and in the past 6 years have been consistently around 23. It is likely that the team size in 2007 will be up to 30. This number includes competitors, management and medical personnel.

AUS is attempting to closely align the Winter Universiade program to other high performance winter sport programs in Australia to ensure the event serves to compliment the high performance pathways being offered to winter sport participants in Australia.

Eligibility:

Tour cost and Partners:

Before AUS’ success in attracting funding for this tour, the expected levy per person for the tour was approximately $4000 - $4500 and includes:

• Flights
• Departure tax and transfers
• Visas
• Uniform
• Accommodation
• Meals
• Insurance
• Inland transportation
• Administration costs
• Cultural Tours/events

AUS has worked hard over the past few years to secure funding from various partners to reduce this levy to athletes and officials. To date AUS has secured funding from the Australian Sports Commission and Mt Buller Ski Lifts Pty Ltd to significantly reduce the costs of attendance by team members.

Any corporate entities interested in a partnership with AUS will be serviced via a comprehensive sponsor servicing program. The servicing program will focus on opportunities that exist within the university sport sector both nationally and international to advance the objectives of the partner.
