Australian University Championship – Golf
The AUC Golf for 2005 was held the week of December 5-9
in Perth W.A. Over 80 competitors from 12 universities across
Australia participated including the largest field of women
in the history of the event.
The week commenced with unseasonably cool weather forcing
the Queenslanders to empty their bags in search of warmer
gear. During the first few days of competition the wind
was unpredictable presenting a challenge to even the best
in the field. However, conditions improved throughout the
event and by the end of the week, conditions were ideal
for the Match Play Event.
The Western Australian Golf Club set a challenging course
in pristine condition amongst picturesque environs with
a spectacular view of the city. Thanks to the Members and
Staff of The Western Australian Golf Club for their support
in ensuring the success of this Event.
Defending champions Griffith university fought bravely
in an attempt to retain titles won in 2004 however, both
the Macquarie University Men and Victoria University Women
put on convincing performances to take out the Men’s
and Women’s Teams events.
The Women from Victoria University are to be commended
for their top class performance, winning not only the Women’s
Team Event but also the Women’s Match Play.
Macquarie University took out the Men’s Team event
after three days of competition by a single stroke over
defending champions Griffith University.
Congratulations to Paulo Montoya from The University of
New South Wales who won the Men’s Individual Event
with a commendable performance and Stacey Keating of Victoria
University who won Gold in the Women’s Individual
Event convincingly. Paulo & Stacey also clinched top
positions on the Men’s & Women’s Green &
Gold teams.
On the home front, special mention goes to Perrine Petit
from Edith Cowan University who placed 3rd in the Women’s
Individual Event and also secured a spot on the Women’s
Green & Gold Team and to The University of Western Australia
Women’s Team which secured Bronze in the Women’s
Team Event.
Griffith University proved they are still a ‘force
to be reckoned with’ maintaining their stronghold
on the Men’s Match Play Event to emerge victorious
as Men’s Match Play Champions.
