UniSport Australia is excited to re-launch the University Basketball League (UBL) in what will be a first for university sport in Australia.
With the endorsement and support of Basketball Australia and its respective State and Territory Basketball Associations, the UBL will feature both men’s and women’s basketball teams from universities across Australia. Commencing in early April 2021 and culminating with finals at the end of May 2021, all matches will be held on campus mid-week and will be livestreamed for viewing around the country.
UniSport CEO Mark Sinderberry said: “This is the first time a national basketball tournament dedicated to university students has been held for both women and men in Australia. The opportunity to bring a national league on campuses across Australia provides a unique experience for the participating universities and their students. The UBL stands to ignite the traditional rivalries that exist amongst universities, some spanning back as many as 150 years.”
“Basketball is played by more university students than any other sport on campus in Australia, positioning the UBL as a wonderful opportunity for universities to capture the pride and connection students past and present enjoy through their university careers.”
Basketball Australia Executive General Manager Basketball Paul Maley said the University Basketball League is a welcome addition to the basketball pathway within Australia.
“Basketball Australia is delighted to endorse the establishment of the University Basketball League by UniSport Australia, as it provides a further opportunity for athletes, coaches and officials to engage with the sport at a local and national level.
“The popularity of basketball, particularly amongst university students continues to rise across Australia, and the University Basketball League will enable participants to represent their respective campus while experiencing all the benefits that basketball offers.
“Basketball Australia looks forward to working with UniSport to make the University Basketball League a huge success both on and off the court for years to come.”
The tip-off for the 2021 UBL will be April 13 with the top four teams playing for a spot in the finals at the end of May. The schedule and teams for the 2021 UBL will be released soon.
