Victoria University student and 2018 Commonwealth Games shooting silver medallist Sergei Evglevski will lead the Australian UniRoos into the opening ceremony at the Stadio San Paolo in Napoli on Wednesday, after being announced as Australian team flagbearer.
The 21-year-old business student comes into the 2019 Napoli Summer Universiade after a very successful 2018 which saw him crowned 2018 World University Shooting Championships winner in the 25m rapid fire event to go with a silver medal in the team event, followed by a silver medal in the same event at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
A surprised Evglevski was honoured to be chosen to carry the flag and lead the 184-strong UniRoos out at the Opening Ceremony.
“It’s very unexpected because there are so many deserving athletes in the team this year. I’m very honoured to be chosen and am excited to lead the team into San Paolo Stadium for the opening ceremony,” Evglevksi said.
Evglevski is only the second shooter to receive the honour, after Olympic gold medallist and Summer Universiade bronze medallist Catherine Skinner was given the role four years ago in Gwangju, South Korea.
Competition for the shooting commences on Thursday July 4, with Evgevski beginning his action the following day on 5 July.
