Next year will be the fourth year UniSport has teamed up with NBL 3x3Hustle, Australia’s official 3x3 basketball pathway to conduct the championships, branded as the 3x3 Big Hustle Uni.

The championships will take place at the purpose-built 3x3 facility, Swisherr, which boasts more than five FIBA-approved courts. A newly activated partnership between Swisherr and University of Tasmania (UTAS) aims to drive participation in the sport and increase its presence in the region.

UTAS Director of Sport, Don Knapp welcomes the opportunity to host the championships. “University of Tasmania Sport is excited to host a UniSport event in 2022. We have been eyeing off a championship event for a few years now, and Swisherr’s facility here in the city provides an excellent opportunity for us to do so”.

“We’re keen to have the other universities come and see our beautiful state of Tasmania, and it links perfectly well with our aim to further develop a performance pathway for basketball student-athletes here at UTAS” Don elaborated.

Swisherr Founder and Director, David Bartlett shares similar sentiments. “We are thrilled that our unique partnership with University of Tasmania will see this wonderful tournament come to Hobart for the first time. Swisherr is working with all Tasmanian basketball clubs, Basketball Tasmania and the University to provide exciting pathways for young Tasmanians to play basketball and further their education with a degree course”.

“We are excited to welcome all Australian universities to our unique, purpose-built 3x3 facility in the centre of the City of Hobart”, David added.

The UniSport team are excited by the opportunity to take a national event to Tasmania. “Not only will student-athletes have the chance to compete in the fantastic facilities, but they will also get to experience the event atmosphere created by University of Tasmania and explore all that Hobart has to offer” said Mark Sinderberry, UniSport CEO.

3x3Hustle Manager Jaele Patrick is excited about the direction of the sport overall, given the previous success of 3x3 Big Hustle Uni tournaments. “3x3Hustle is proud to partner with UniSport for a fourth year and bring Big Hustle Uni to Tasmania. Given the success of 3x3 basketball’s debut at the Tokyo Olympic Games and the anticipation for the Commonwealth Games, it is an exciting time of growth for the sport.”

“We look forward to seeing students from UniSport’s 43 member universities begin the elite pathway into 3x3 basketball on 20-22 April next year at Swisherr’s purpose-built 3x3 facility,” Jaele said.

The 3x3 championships form part of the wider UniSport Nationals competition structure, which is comprises over 40 sports. The annual event moves to a different host location each year and will also see the top placing teams progress to the FISU Oceania qualifying tournament for the 3x3 Basketball University World Cup to be held in Xiamen, China in October 2022.
