The 2026 UniSport 3×3 Basketball National Championships will elevate wheelchair basketball on the national university stage, with 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball joining the program for the first time. The new category strengthens competitive pathways and broadens representation for student-athletes across Australia.
UniSport are excited to continue working alongside NBL 3x3Hustle, Australia’s official 3×3 basketball pathway to conduct the championships, branded as the 2026 UniSport 3×3 Hustle Uni Nationals. Scheduled to take place from 6-8 May 2026 at the University of Canberra, the national showcase will bring together students from across Australia to compete. Alongside the men’s and women’s Division 1 and Division 2 contests, the expanded program highlights UniSport’s commitment to accessibility, opportunity and equitable competition for students through our events.
For universities, the category strengthens development avenues and supports the continued growth of campus-based wheelchair basketball programs. For student-athletes, it provides greater visibility, inclusive participation, and a national platform to showcase talent.
Leading the way, University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) was the first institution to register for the inaugural 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball event, a move that mirrors their ongoing dedication to inclusive sport and meaningful opportunities for UniSC students. Aleisha Howey, UniSC Sport and Fitness Sports Engagement Coordinator, reflected on the impact the event will have within the university sector.
“UniSC is incredibly proud to be involved in the inaugural 3×3 wheelchair basketball event at UniSport Nationals. The introduction of this category is a significant and exciting step forward in expanding adaptive sport opportunities within the university landscape. At UniSC, we are deeply committed to creating inclusive sporting environments and meaningful competitive pathways for students of all abilities. Opportunities like this not only elevate wheelchair basketball nationally but also empower our student-athletes to represent their university with pride while continuing to grow the profile of adaptive sport” she said.
This outlook from UniSC aligns with the broader vision of UniSport, with UniSport CEO Mark Sinderberry highlighting the national significance of the event, saying “The addition of Wheelchair Basketball at the 3×3 Nationals represents a meaningful evolution of our events. UniSport is dedicated to growing adaptive sport, and this builds on that work by creating enhanced competitive pathways for student-athletes of all abilities.”
With wheelchair basketball now embedded within the 3×3 program, access and representation in university sport continue to expand. Across the National Championships calendar, students are encouraged to explore ways to get involved in adaptive sports, whether as competitors, volunteers or advocates within their university communities.
Beyond basketball, multi-class categories are integrated within Athletics, Swimming, Cross Country, Triathlon and Distance Running National Championships. Inclusive participation is also available across several other Nationals sports, including rowing, cycling and fencing, reflecting UniSport’s ongoing efforts to ensure university sport is welcoming and accessible for all.
The new 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball category adds an exciting dimension to the program, further expanding pathways and recognition for student-athletes nationwide. Students interested in competing in 2026 are encouraged to contact their University Team Manager for registration details and more information. Early bird registrations are now open for the 2026 UniSport 3×3 Hustle Uni Nationals.
