UniSport is responsible for the participation of student-athletes at an international level during the elite Summer and Winter Universiades taking place biennially, as well as at more than 20 International University Sport Federation (FISU) World University Championships and University World Cups worldwide.
Student-athletes representing Australia at such events are known as ‘UniRoos’ and are recognised as some of the nation’s most talented athletes. With an extensive list of former UniRoos going on to compete and medal at Olympic and Commonwealth Games, play high-level professional sport, and become globally renowned athletes, the program is an excellent platform for future sporting success.
In order to be eligible to compete at a FISU event, all competitors must meet the following criteria:
Australia first competed at the FISU Summer World University Games in Tokyo, Japan in 1967 and has been involved in every event since with the exception of 1975 in Rome, Italy. During that time Australian student-athletes have amassed a total of 167 medals, achieving Australia’s highest ever medal tally position of 10th in Kazan, Russia in 2013.

Our thoughts are with the family, friends and teammates of UniRoo and UNSW Sydney student Aedyn Pratley (far left), who recently passed away.
Aedyn was a dedicated fencer who proudly represented his clubs, state and country throughout his career. He represented Australia as a UniRoo at both the 2023 and 2025 World University Games and was a valued member of the Australian university sport community.
Away from competition, Aedyn was in the final stages of completing a degree in Computer Science and Engineering at UNSW Sydney.
Aedyn`s family has set up a website where friends, teammates and loved ones can share photos, stories and memories in celebration of his life. We invite those in the UniRoos and UniSport communities to share their favourite memories of Aedyn on this website via the link in our stories.
We extend our deepest condolences to Aedyn`s family, friends, teammates, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
