Monash University Defends UniSport Nationals Cheer and Dance Championship Title 

Monash University have defended their overall champions title at the 2026 UniSport Nationals Cheer and Dance Championships, continuing their run of success in the competition. 

Held in Melbourne on 10 August, the event brought together more than 300 competitors from nine universities, with 60 routines highlighting the athleticism and creativity of university cheer and dance in Australia. 

Monash University took first place in the Overall Nationals University Cheer Championship Rankings, with Deakin University finishing second and Bond University rounding out the podium in third. 

The cheer title was highly contested between Deakin and Monash again this year; however, it was Monash who came out on top, extending their triumphant run in university cheer having won the cheer championship at every competition since 2019. 

The 2026 Pennant for Dance was awarded to Monash as well with a strong field of eight universities across the day, cementing them as the university to beat.  

This year’s event also saw the return of the University of the Sunshine Coast for the first time since 2020, and La Trobe University since 2019.  

UniSport Australia Director, and RMIT University Chief Operating Officer and Vice President, Fiona Notley, was among the awards presenters alongside UniSport Australia Board Member and Director of Sport at Monash, Brett Lavale. 

“It was a privilege to present medals at today’s UniSport Cheer and Dance Nationals with fellow Board Member Brett Lavale,” Notley said. 

“You could feel the incredible energy in the room – friendship and sporting spirit came together perfectly. You did not need to see every routine to know how much heart and hard work went into today; it was written all over the athletes’ faces as they walked up to receive their medals.  

Congratulations to every university, coach and student who made this such a celebration of university sport.” 

For Monash, the championships provided another opportunity to celebrate the commitment of their teams and the strength of the university’s cheer and dance community. 

“It was fantastic to once again be part of UniSport Nationals and see so many universities come together in Melbourne,” said Monash University Programs Coordinator and University Team Manager, Marcia Stephens, after the presentation.  

“The quality of competition across both divisions made for a wonderful day of sport. It was also great to see everyone cheering and supporting each other from the stands, and from a Monash perspective, we are incredibly proud of our teams and their commitment with back-to-back championships.”  

The 2026 UniSport Nationals Cheer and Dance Championships were delivered with the support of the Australian All Star Cheerleading Federation (AASCF) as Competition Manager. 

With returning universities, new competitors and another two championships for Monash, the 2026 event celebrated the university cheer and dance community across Australia.
