Zoe banks on the University of Tasmania in the UBL

In her first year of a Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine degree, University of Tasmania (UTAS) student Zoe Banks is excited about being part of the University Basketball League Australia (UBL) and is already seeing a positive impact on her university experience.

The timing of UTAS joining the UBL was perfect for Zoe and gave her the opportunity to stay close to home and study the degree of her choice as well as maintain her involvement in a national basketball competition. Although initially considering the opportunity to study and play in the USA, Zoe’s decision to study in Australia was influenced by the impact of potentially needing to requalify as well as regain involvement in Australian basketball.

“I am so excited about the competitive standard of the UBL and the quality of players in the other teams. The UBL is another high-level competition for players who can also be studying at the same time which means we do not have to choose between sport and study.”

Zoe sees the UBL as a wonderful opportunity to develop her game and allows her to continue playing for the NBL1 Hobart Chargers and pursue her goal of playing in the WNBL.

UniSport Australia (UniSport) Chief Executive Officer Mark Sinderberry says “UniSport is proud of the opportunity that the UBL brings in allowing student-athletes to chase their academic goals whilst playing in the university basketball league in Australia.”

In their inaugural season in the UBL, the UTAS women’s team currently sits in sixth place on the
women’s competition ladder and 8th in the men’s. With their next match being away against the University of the Sunshine Coast, the UTAS teams are looking to secure another win and move one step closer to a finals berth.
