The University of Sydney Claim Third Consecutive University Tennis League Title 

The University of Sydney have claimed the 2026 University Tennis League (UTL) title for a third consecutive year, defeating The University of Queensland 5-4 in a thrilling gold medal match at Blacktown Tennis Centre Stanhope, Sydney. 

With the support of Tennis Australia, the UTL returned for its third year in 2026 showcasing high-quality university tennis through its mixed format, where men and women compete alongside and against each other across their rubbers. The league provides student-athletes with competitive opportunities in a team-based environment as well as the chance to build their Universal Tennis Rating (UTR). 

Across the three-day finals, held from 8-10 September, six universities – The University of Sydney (USYD), The University of Queensland (UQ), The University of Western Australia (UWA Maali), Monash University, Deakin University and Adelaide University (AU Waatu) – came together for a finals series highlighted by close contests, strong team culture and standout individual performances. 

Day one of the finals got underway with UQ defeating AU Waatu 6-3, while Monash secured a 5-4 win over Deakin to progress to the next stage. 

Day two saw USYD record a 6-1 win over Monash, while UQ claimed a narrow 5-4 victory over UWA Maali. Deakin also overcame AU Waatu 6-3 to secure fifth place. USYD and UQ advanced to play for gold, while UWA Maali and Monash would meet for the bronze. 

In a high-quality match on day three to decide the gold medal and championship title, USYD defeated UQ 5-4 to claim their third consecutive championship. 

Head of Sport at Sydney Uni Sport Leonie Lum and Program Director at Sydney University Lawn Tennis Club James Palmer reflected on the team’s performance and the work that went into another successful UTL campaign. 

“This result reflects the sustained commitment our players and coaching staff have shown throughout the year, and we are pleased to see that effort recognised. Thank you to UniSport Australia for its organisation of the tournament, and to the participating universities for their contribution to the competition. We congratulate our student-athletes and coaches on a well-earned outcome.” 

UWA Maali claimed third place with a strong 6-0 victory over Monash rounding out the finals that celebrated competitive tennis, team spirit and the growing strength of university tennis programs across Australia. 

UniSport also acknowledges Tennis Australia’s appointed Tournament Referee, David Matthews, and Court Supervisor, Tania Duffy, for their professionalism and support across all three days of competition. Their contribution ensured a well-run and high-quality finals series.
