Intervarsity sport back at its best in the East

UniSport members in NSW and ACT have embraced the return to sport by getting involved in a suite of recent intervarsity opportunities. Since September, 12 sports events have taken place across the region allowing students to battle it out against their local rivals.

University of Canberra (UC) took out the inaugural Canberra InTRIvarsity event held on 24 September against cross town rivals Australian National University (ANU) and Australian Catholic University (ACU) in a clean sweep of the netball and touch football competitions.

UC also enjoyed a tough battle against ANU in the annual Black Mountain Battle held on multiple days from 25 September to 23 October. UC came out on top again after claiming five wins across netball, touch, basketball, futsal, volleyball, table tennis, and ultimate competitions.

University of Technology Sydney (UTS) took on University of New South Wales (UNSW) and University of Sydney (USYD) in a basketball and netball series across September and October. In a tightly contested netball series with UNSW, UTS claimed wins in both the women’s and mixed competitions. They also took out a series win against USYD in both competitions.

The UTS women’s basketball team dominated against USYD winning the series 3-0. The men’s competition came down to the wire with USYD claiming a series win after nudging the UTS team out in the third and final match.

Macquarie University (MQU) hosted a number of intervarsity events, the first being ultimate on 30 September. It was a close competition for all teams with UNSW, USYD, and UTS all coming away with two wins each. The hosts took it to their opponents (UNSW, ACPE, USYD and WS) in the mixed touch competition on 2 October with MQU claiming three wins and a draw.

An Indigenous event held on 13 October proved successful with those students involved thoroughly enjoying friendly rivalry across netball, basketball and touch competitions. MQU came away with a win in all three sports. MQU also hosted UTS in a one day men’s and mixed futsal event on 12 October. It was a tight tussle in the men’s however UTS claimed wins in both competitions.

On 2 October UNSW hosted MQU for a mixed hockey match, holding on to claim a narrow 2-1 win.

On 16 October ACPE, MQU and WS competed at the University League 9’s event held at the NSWRL Centre of Excellence at Olympic Park in both men’s and women’s competitions. Despite formidable efforts from all teams it was WS who came out on top in both competitions.

ACU hosted a squash intervarsity event on 24 October involving 23 students from MQU, UNSW and USYD. USYD came away with wins across all three divisions.

Congratulations to all those UniSport members who were involved in both hosting and participating in these events. It was wonderful to see intervarsity sport back at its best in the region once again.
