readRound Six of the New Balance University Basketball League (UBL) delivered plenty of action in a week that saw shock losses and unexpected upsets shake up the competition, as well as high-scoring showdowns throughout twelve games played across five states.
Starting in Tasmania at Moonah Sports Centre, Hobart, Round Six began with the University of Tasmania taking on USYD (The University of Sydney). The men’s game was deemed one of the games of the season, as two title contenders went head-to-head in a high-scoring clash, with Tasmania holding their nerve in the closing stages to claim a statement win at home 101-98. For the women, the University of Tasmania capitalised on their home-court advantage and produced key plays in the final half to secure a statement win and strengthen their finals push, claiming a crucial 82-74 victory over the defending champions, who until this game had been undefeated in the 2025 New Balance UBL, causing quite an upset and disrupting a perfect run for USYD.
Day Two resumed in Tasmania, as the University of Tasmania played their second game for the week hosting the Curtin Carnaby’s (Curtin University). The Tasmanian-side produced high scores in both games, where the women’s team made a statement with a 100-64 triumph in a dominating match, achieving the first triple-digit score recorded this season for the women’s division. The men also cracked triple digits, securing a 104-79 win against Curtin, continuing to showcase their strength.
Next The University of Newcastle hosted La Trobe University at NUsport At The Forum, where in the men’s game, Newcastle kept La Trobe chasing as the away side just couldn’t close the gap, with Newcastle achieving a home victory 95-80. The women’s game saw the pressure on for the undefeated La Trobe, where there was one-point in it with seven seconds to go, but La Trobe held their nerve to secure a 68-64 win and continue their streak.
Over in Queensland at the UniSC Arena, the UniSC Mari took on UNSW Sydney (University of New South Wales). Up first were for the women, where the UniSC Mari had control the entire game, keeping the away team chasing as they secured an 88-46 victory at home. For the men, it was a close matchup that saw UNSW Sydney start to break away towards the end of the second quarter and not look back, claiming a 102-82 win.
The last games for day two took place in Victoria at the Fed Sport and Recreation Centre, as the Fed Falcons (Federation University Australia) hosted The University of Melbourne. Up first were the women, where the away side stayed a step ahead of the home team throughout and secured a high-scoring 96-67 victory. In the men’s matchup, The University of Melbourne showcased their dominance with a commanding 128-58 win over the Fed Falcons.
Day Three saw the UWA Maali (The University of Western Australia) play the AU Waatu (The University of Adelaide) at the UWA Sport and Recreation Centre. The women’s game was a close one that saw the lead switch up throughout the match, but it was the AU Waatu who came away victorious 69-62. The men’s game was also tight, with the AU Waatu causing a double home upset to win 88-80.
At the end of Round Six of the 2025 New Balance UBL, for the men The University of Melbourne remain on top of the ladder with the University of Tasmania in second, moving USYD into third. In the women’s division, La Trobe University have knocked USYD off the top of the ladder as they still remain undefeated, with USYD moving down to third place as the University of Tasmania move up into second.
With Round Six now complete, the focus turns to Round Seven which is set to deliver another week of fierce competition as we get closer to finals.
