readThe University of Sydney have defended their title in the 2025 University Tennis League (UTL), defeating The University of Western Australia 6-3 in the gold medal match and securing the UTL title for the second year in a row.
With the support of Tennis Australia, the UTL provides an opportunity for university tennis players across Australia to compete against each other, with all teams being mixed so men and women have the chance to play with and against each other in their fixtures.
This was the second year of the UTL, and a record breaking 12 universities played in the 2025 league, expanding the competition depth with the following universities participating:
The league consisted of qualifying fixtures played within four regional conferences from the north, east, south and west, with the top team in each conference progressing to the finals as twelve had to become four. It was UQ (North), USYD (East), DEAK (South) and UWA (West) who advanced.
In the thrilling finals, held over two days at UQ in St Lucia from Wednesday 17 – Thursday 18 September, day one saw all four teams fight hard in the semi-finals across both singles and doubles matches, where USYD cruised past DEAK 8-1, and UWA defeated last year’s runnerup UQ 5-4.
Day two saw USYD dominate in the gold medal match with a 6-3 victory over UWA to claim the UTL title for the second year in a row, showcasing their strength and consistency on the court.
After their win, USYD UTL player Michael Tam reflected on the 2025 UTL season, saying “we really enjoyed the competition, it was a great atmosphere. Thank you to UQ for hosting this event, it was amazing, and the courts were beautiful. In general, this year I feel like everyone was super keen, especially with the UniSport Nationals coming up as well this has been one of the greatest events.”
In the bronze medal match between DEAK and UQ, it was UQ who completed the podium and secured third, beating DEAK 8-1.
Regarding the UTL, Sean Spralja, Competitive Play Coordinator at Tennis Australia, said “Tennis Australia is incredibly pleased to support UniSport Australia in the operation and running of the University Tennis League. The UTL provides a valuable opportunity for university students to stay engaged within tennis and play within a team environment. The four competing teams at the UTL Finals represented their universities very well, and with a record 12 teams in the overall event in 2025, we look forward to seeing the UTL go from strength to strength in the coming years.” Mr Spralja’s expert guidance and support with Tennis Australia has been instrumental in working towards growing and improving the UTL, which will return in 2026.
Congratulations to USYD on being crowned winners of the 2025 UTL, and to UWA, UQ and DEAK for putting on such a great display across finals.
