readAs the regular season nears its end, Round Seven of the New Balance University Basketball League (UBL) brought another big week of action and high-scoring contests on the road to finals, with sixteen games played across two states.
Day one kicked off at the Victoria University Community Sports Stadium, as Victoria University took on the UWA Maali (The University of Western Australia). First up were the women, who had a close first half before the away team gained momentum and widened their lead, upsetting the home side 69-44. For the men, it was another tight game as the lead went back-and-forth and at one stage, the UWA Maali pulled away, but Victoria University came back fighting in the fourth quarter to secure an 84-72 victory at home.
Next UNSW Sydney hosted the AU Waatu (The University of Adelaide) at the City of Sydney Basketball Association. In the men’s matchup, Adelaide started strong and established control early, leaving the home team chasing as they secured a 98-70 win. For the women, it was a hard-fought battle as the teams were neck-and-neck throughout, but it was UNSW Sydney who emerged victorious, winning 72-69 after they found their edge in the later stages.
Back in Victoria at the Nona Lee Sports Centre, The University of Melbourne played the Curtin Carnaby’s (Curtin University). The men’s game was yet another high-scoring contest, as Melbourne dominated to secure a 122-71 win and deliver another statement performance. For the women, it was the Curtin Carnaby’s who came out on top, winning 78-54.
Day two kicked off again at the Victoria University Community Sports Stadium, as Victoria University hosted the Curtin Carnaby’s. The women’s Curtin team made it a double away victory, as they put on a strong display to defeat the home side 69-39. For the men, in a landmark performance for the Curtin Carnaby’s, they broke the 100-point barrier for the first time this season with a 100-78 win.
The University of Melbourne then took on the UWA Maali at the Nona Lee Sports Centre. The men’s Melbourne side continued their high-scoring run to once again crack the 100-point mark, defeating the away team 108-76. The women’s team then made it a double home win, beating the UWA Maali 58-45.
Day three began with USYD (The University of Sydney) taking on the Fed Falcons (Federation University Australia) at the USYD Sports and Aquatic Centre. The women’s matchup was a high-scoring game that saw USYD hit triple digits for the first time this season with a commanding 106-76 win. For the men, the offensive showcase continued for USYD as they defeated the Fed Falcons 117-78.
At La Trobe Sports Stadium, La Trobe University hosted the UniSC Mari. Up first were the women, where La Trobe continued their sheer dominance to remain undefeated, winning 93-83. La Trobe also produced a strong performance in the men’s game, overcoming the UniSC Mari 109-80.
The last games for day three took place at NUsport At The Forum, as The University of Newcastle took on UNSW Sydney. The New Balance UBL debutants took the win in both the men and women’s game, as the men won 96-87 and the women 56-36 to secure victories at home.
At the end of Round Seven of the 2025 New Balance UBL, for the men The University of Melbourne continue to lead, topping the leaderboard with USYD in second place. For the women, the undefeated La Trobe University remain on top with the University of Tasmania sitting second on the ladder.
With Round Seven now complete, there is officially one week left of the regular season before finals rounds, as teams are gearing up for a final push to secure their spots.
