readRound Eight of the 2025 New Balance University Basketball League (UBL) marked the final week of the regular season, as teams battled to solidify the top eight positions ahead of finals, with eight games played across three states.
Day one saw the AU Waatu (The University of Adelaide) take on the University of Tasmania at the South Australia State Basketball Centre. Up first were the women, where the Tasmanian side continued their strong form and win streak to defeat the home side 76-59. For the men, it was the AU Waatu who emerged victorious, winning 90-88 as they kept the away side chasing.
Day two kicked off again at the SA State Basketball Centre, as the AU Waatu took on USYD (The University of Sydney). In the women’s game, the AU Waatu caused a shock upset as they overpowered the Sydney-side 74-56, resulting in USYD’s second loss of the season so far. The men’s matchup then saw USYD defeat the home team, winning 92-85.
Over at NUsport At The Forum, The University of Newcastle hosted Victoria University. The women’s game saw Victoria University win their first match of the season as they defeated the home team 74-56 to claim their first victory. This win means every team has now secured one this season. Victoria University’s men backed the victory up with a win of their own, overcoming The University of Newcastle 74-56.
The final game for Round Eight took place at the Fed Sport and Recreation Centre, as the Fed Falcons (Federation University Australia) played La Trobe University. Up first were the men in a tightly contested clash as the home team won 94-93 in a nail-biting finish. Down 91-93 in the final moments, the Fed Falcons hit a decisive three-pointer with three seconds on the clock to take the win. For the women, La Trobe University continued their unbeaten run with a commanding 95-76 win.
The end of Round Eight confirmed the top eight teams that will progress into the 2025 New Balance UBL Quarter Finals:

After a week break for the UniSport Nationals from 27 September – 03 October, the 2025 New Balance UBL Quarter Finals will commence the following week.
Heading into the Quarter Finals, for the men, The University of Melbourne have retained their top spot on the ladder, followed by USYD. For the women, La Trobe University remain undefeated in first place, with the University of Tasmania in second.
Eight teams will soon become four, and the chase truly begins.
