The Australian UniRoos have finished the 10 days of competition at the 31st FISU Summer World University Games with six medals against some of the best student-athletes from around the world.
The competition held in Chengdu, China from 28 July – 8 August saw over 6500 student athletes from 113 countries participate. The Australian UniRoos competed in ten sports ranging from Archery, Athletics, Water Polo and Wushu.
UniRoos Chef De Mission, Carrie Graf praised the strong contingent of student-athletes, some who were representing Australia for the first time on the international stage. “It was fantastic to see the Australian athletes compete against some of the best student-athletes in the world. For some of our athletes, it was the first time they have represented Australia on the international stage. They performed with distinction,” said Graf.
Graf also applauded the Chengdu 2021 organising committee for a great event. “Chengdu is a very beautiful city, friendly people and they pride themselves on their green parks, bikeways, and commitment to be environmentally conscious to keep their city beautiful. Of course, it is the home of the giant pandas. The Australian contingent had a fantastic time” stated Graf.
The Australian UniRoos shone in the Athletics competition, winning one gold, one silver and three bronze medals. These performances were highlighted by a come from behind victory for Cara Feain-Ryan in the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase. The world class performance by Reece Holder in the Men’s 400m was not only a FISU record and personal best, but also an Olympic Qualifying time. Holder is now ranked 5th fastest All Time, and his run of 44.79 is the fastest time by an Australian in seventeen years.

The Women’s Water Polo ended our time in China on a thrilling note with a one goal victory over Japan, claiming bronze.
Overall, Australia won six medals, with 26 Top 8 finishes across Athletics, Diving, Rowing, Water Polo and Wushu.
