Australia’s top university distance runners took to the streets of the Gold Coast on 4-5 July, with the 2026 UniSport Nationals Distance Running Championships held in conjunction with the iconic ASICS Gold Coast Marathon.
More than 200 student-athletes from 29 member universities competed across the marathon, half marathon and 10km events, with men’s, women’s and multi-class competitions contributing to the overall university standings.
The championships formed part of one of Australia’s premier road running events, giving student-athletes the opportunity to compete alongside experienced distance runners from across the country and around the world.
Standout Performances
The men’s marathon title was claimed by Joseph Nagle (The University of Sydney), who crossed the finish line in 2:28:39, while Tom Bowers (Monash University) secured victory in the half marathon with a time of 1:04:11.
Matthew Buckell (La Trobe University) claimed the UniSport 10km title with a time of 29:32, while also finishing third overall in the Gold Coast Marathon 10km event, just four seconds behind the overall race winner.
In the women’s competition, Alex Emerson (Macquarie University) took out the marathon in 2:54:05. Ruby Smee (University of Tasmania) claimed the half marathon title with a winning time of 1:11:24, while Ally Brooks (La Trobe University) won the 10km event in 34:22.
The multi-class 10km championship was won by Tamsin Colley (UNSW Sydney), who completed the course in 56:12.
Across the overall university standings, The University of Queensland claimed the men’s championship with 77 points, finishing ahead of Deakin University (51 points) and The University of Sydney (41 points).
In the women’s standings, Deakin University secured the championship with 42 points, narrowly ahead of UNSW Sydney (39 points), while Macquarie University rounded out the top three with 35 points.
Speaking on Deakin University taking out the women’s pennant, Thewin Robertson, Sport Engagement Co-ordinator at Deakin said the result was a reflection of the continued growth and commitment of the university’s distance running program.
“It’s something we have been building towards over the years and is a testament to the effort of the Deakin students who make the trip to the Gold Coast each year. Hopefully we can sustain this success going forward.”
The 2026 UniSport Nationals Distance Running Championships showcased the depth of talent in Australian university sport, with outstanding performances throughout the weekend highlighting the strength and reach of university sport across the country.
