readThe 2025 East Regional IV Oztag Intervarsity event held at UNSW Sydney on 24 July, brought together 129 student participants across ten teams from universities including the Australian College of Physical Education, Australian Catholic University, Charles Sturt University, Macquarie University, University of Canberra, UNSW Sydney, Western Sydney University and The University of Sydney.
Events like these are designed to help teams build rapport, benchmark performance, and prepare for Nationals. For regional multi-campus universities, connecting before major events can be a challenge as most players typically meet only the day before Nationals. With UniSport Australia arranging Intervarsity competitions like the East Regional Intervarsity Oztag event, it offers a unique opportunity for these students to get to know one another and strengthen teamwork foundations in the lead up to Nationals.
Sophie Kleeman, Student Liaison Officer (Sport and Uni Nationals) at Charles Sturt University (CSU), reflected on the value of the event, saying “The Oztag Intervarsity was a fantastic opportunity for our university Nationals Oztag team to meet and play together for the first time”.
Ms Kleeman highlighted how these opportunities arranged by UniSport Australia are particularly important to Charles Sturt University, sharing that “as a regional multi-campus university, most of our CSU teams only meet the day before Nationals, with no opportunity for prior training. UniSport Intervarsity events like this one are incredibly valuable for our students, giving our teams a chance to connect, build chemistry and enjoy the experience ahead of Nationals.”
“We’re looking forward to being involved in more Intervarsity events in the future” Ms Kleeman added.
Multi-campus students from the Australian Catholic University also met each other for the first time at the event, making the day even more important for building connections across campuses.
After a day of intense competition, it was Western Sydney University who claimed the win.
The event was praised for its organisation and the opportunity it provided for teams to benchmark where they are at ahead of Nationals, which takes place on the Gold Coast from 27 September – 03 October 2025.
With strong participation and valuable experiences gained, the East Regional IV Oztag Intervarsity event provided an opportunity to strengthen university sport and foster regional connections.
