Number 8 ranked The University of Melbourne has caused one of the shock boilovers of the 2025 New Balance Women’s University Basketball League season, crushing the previously undefeated and number 1 ranked La Trobe University on their home patch in the Women’s UBL Quarter Final.
A shell-shocked Eagles outfit proved no match for a relentless Winged Victory team, who set the tone from the outset and extended their lead at every change before finally finishing with a thumping 99-62 win at the La Trobe Sports Park Stadium.
Headlined by unrelenting defensive pressure on La Trobe’s key playmakers and an incredible shooting display from beyond the arc, the University of Melbourne’s powerful performance was led by outstanding efforts from Kayla Simmons (26 points, 15 rebounds), Layla Prince (21 points, 13 rebounds) and captain Lara Essex (21 points, six assists). Stand in La Trobe captain Kayla Vitale (15 points, five assists) and Jaida Reid (14 points, four rebounds) did their best to keep the Eagles in the hunt, but ultimately it wasn’t enough to stop the Winged Victory progressing to the Semi Finals.
