Lake Placid 2023 World University Games comes to a close

The Australian UniRoos have wrapped up a whirlwind 12 days at the Lake Placid 2023 FISU World University Games, with a record number of student-athletes competing under the Australian flag in seven of the eleven sports on offer – from Cross Country Ski to Curling, Biathlon, Snowboard, Alpine Ski, Freestyle Ski and Figure Skating.

The team of 25 student-athletes battled challenging weather conditions and fierce competition against approximately 2500 of the best student-athletes from more than 50 countries around the world.

Some great results in the Alpine Skiing contingent, with Madison Hoffman (Bachelor of Science, The University of Utah) leading the way, placing 6th in both the Giant Slalom and Slalom events alongside Katie Parker (Bachelor of Business Administration, The University of Utah) who finished in 10th place in Giant Slalom.

Alfred Wenk (Bachelor of Design, University of South Australia) (pictured) finished an impressive 7th place in the Men’s Ski Cross. Seve de Campo (Bachelor of Engineering (Hons)/ Commerce, Australian National University) and Rosie Fordham (Bachelor of Chemistry and Mathematics, University of Alaska Fairbanks) were highest placed in the Cross Country Skiing reaching quarter finals in the Sprint.

Australian UniRoos Chef de Mission Ian Fitzpatrick is proud of the way the team handled the pressure at Lake Placid 2023: “Each athlete brought an amazing attitude to the event and represented their university as well as country with pride and incredible resilience.”

“With the largest Australian team ever to represent at a FISU Winter University Games, there is a lot to look forward to as we focus our sights on the 2025 FISU Winter World University Games in Torino, Italy.”
