The final Mainfreight Match of the Day at the 2026 UniSport Nationals in Perth featured the men’s and women’s Football Gold Medal Matches at UWA Sports Park.
La Trobe University faced Western Sydney University in the men’s final, before Western Sydney returned to the pitch to take on the University of Wollongong in the women’s decider.
Fellow student-athletes lined the hills around the pitch, their chants carrying across the venue as the two finals unfolded. Edith Cowan University’s (ECU) media and journalism students provided live coverage, capturing the action.

Up first were the men, with La Trobe University and Western Sydney University (WSYD) facing off in a match the commentary team described as a “colossal match-up”.
The final got off to a fast start, with La Trobe scoring within the first minute. Western Sydney responded quickly with a goal of their own, bringing the score to 1-1 within minutes and setting the tone for a closely contested match.
La Trobe continued pushing forward in search of the lead, creating several opportunities through confident attacking play, including some powerful shots on goal. However, neither team could find another goal before half-time, leaving the scores level at 1-1.
The second half saw no goals, as La Trobe struggled to break through Western Sydney’s defence. With neither side able to find a breakthrough, the match remained finely balanced heading into extra time.
Extra time featured two additional 10-minute halves. La Trobe continued to threaten in the first period, but Western Sydney’s defence held firm to keep the score at 1-1.
La Trobe’s chance to break the deadlock came in the second period of extra time, when they were awarded a penalty. In a crucial moment, Western Sydney goalkeeper Gene Morantos saved the shot, sending the men’s final to a penalty shootout.
With both teams scoring their first two penalties, the shootout remained finely balanced. Morantos proved the difference, saving two of La Trobe’s penalties to give Western Sydney the edge. When the final penalty hit the net, celebrations erupted as Western Sydney secured the gold medal.
Morantos reflected on the pressure of the final, saying that in football finals, “it’s always tight, it’s always left to the last minute but I had full confidence in myself and the boys” heading into the shootout.
After celebrating their victory, the Western Sydney men’s team turned their attention to the women’s final. Morantos backed his teammates to follow suit, declaring, “It’s going to be Western all day.”

The women’s Football Gold Medal Match saw Western Sydney University take on the University of Wollongong in a NSW derby.
Wollongong entered the match looking to defend their 2025 title, while Western Sydney arrived undefeated, having yet to concede a goal throughout the 2026 UniSport Nationals tournament.
The two teams had already met in Round 2, with Western Sydney securing a narrow 1-0 victory, setting the stage for another closely contested battle.
The final got off to a tense, physical start, with Western Sydney and Wollongong fighting for control, trading possession and battling for every ball. The commentators highlighted the intensity of the opening exchanges, with players putting their bodies on the line from the outset.
Wollongong created promising opportunities, while Western Sydney threatened from set pieces, forcing several corners. However, both defences held firm to keep the scores level.
The NSW derby remained evenly matched at 0-0 at half-time, setting up a tense second half.
Wollongong came out firing after the break, breaking through Western Sydney’s defence to take a 1-0 lead and become the first team to score against Western Sydney throughout the tournament.
The reigning champions continued to press forward, creating further attacking opportunities and keeping Western Sydney on the back foot. They were backed by loud support from the sidelines, including the men’s team cheering on their women’s teammates, highlighting the camaraderie between the Western Sydney squads.
Wollongong held firm to protect their lead, successfully defending their title and securing back-to-back gold medals while denying Western Sydney a double gold.
Wollongong player Soriah said it felt absolutely incredible to be back-to-back champions.
“We are over the moon, and we definitely deserve it. I absolutely love these girls.”

The final Mainfreight Match of the Day captured the intensity, skill and camaraderie of UniSport Nationals 2026, bringing the week to a close with two hard-fought Football finals.
