#Napoli2019 day three full report

Swimming – After the excitement of yesterday’s gold medal to William Yang (The University of Sydney), it was more subdued in the pool with Bowen Gough the only UniRoo to qualify for a final. Gough (Deakin University) qualified in the 200m butterfly finishing in 6th in 1:56.69. While fellow UniRoo Charlie Cox (Griffith University) just missed the final finishing in 10th in 1:58.51.

In the finals of the night Griffith University’s Chelsea Hodges just missed the podium finishing 4th in 1:07.58 in the 100m breaststroke, and in a race that only saw three seconds between first and last place, Jared Gilliland (Queensland University of Technology) finished 7th in 2:00.83 in the 200m individual medley. While in the 1500m freestyle final Joshua Parrish (Griffith University) finished 7th in a time of 15:22.11 and Ben Roberts (Edith Cowen University) finished 8th in 15:24.29.

Yesterday’s golden boy William Yang missed the 50m backstroke final by .06 coming in 9th in 22.20 in a semifinal that saw two Universiade records – first by Justin Ress of the US who finished in 24.52 in the first heat and then Zane Waddell of South Africa who finished in 24.46 in the second heat.

In the 200m individual medley Calypso McDonnell (Northwestern University) just missed the final finishing 10th in 2:15.35 and Sophie Caldwell (Deakin University) finished 15th in 2:17.58.

· Julia Hawkins (Monash University) finished 27th in 1:04.20 in the 100m backstroke.

· Calypso McDonnell (Northwestern) finished in 22nd in 1:03.30 in the 100m backstroke.

· University of Queensland’s William Stockwell finished 29th in the 26.02 in the preliminaries of the 50m backstroke.

· Sydney University’s James Traiforos finished in a time of 2:20.10 in the 200m breaststroke, 38th overall and La Trobe’s Brendon Smith clocked 2:20.61 for 40th.

Diving – It was a near medal miss for Nikita Hains (The University of Adelaide) and Olivia O’Rourke (University of Technology Sydney) just missed out on the podium in the 10m synchronised platform finishing in 4th with a total of 234.84 points.

Holly Cushing (Australian Catholic University) finished in 17th place in the 3m springboard semifinals with a total of 186.35.

Shooting – Flinders University’s Jack Rossiter kicked off his 2019 Napoli Summer Universiade campaign in the men’s 10m air rifle qualifications. The business student came out strong producing a score of 625.5, which was enough to secure him 6th place out of 52 and a spot in the final.

In a hotly contested final, Rossiter attempted to recreate the form he produced in qualifying, but unfortunately couldn’t do enough to avoid the first elimination, finishing in 8th position with a score of 119.4.

Frustrated with his performance, Rossiter was already looking forward to the future and improving on his result.

“I felt pretty nervous in the final to be honest, I tried to do what I did in the qualification, tried to repeat the same job, but I couldn’t make it work today unfortunately, and I didn’t get the result,” Rossiter said.

“Still making the final is a good result, I’m happy I made the final, but next time I want to push further.”

With the individual air rifle over, Jack will next team up with Emma Adams (Flinders University) in the mixed team 10m air rifle competition on Monday 8 July.

Gymnastics – Queensland University of Technology’s Michael Tone finished the all-around in 13th with a total score of 78.00. The business student was happy with the result despite reaching his goal of a spot in the top ten.

“It was a lot of fun out there today. I did improve on things that I had made mistakes on the other day, so it was good,” Tone said.

“I gave it away a little bit at the end, but I couldn’t have asked for much better today.”

Tone was up against some of the world’s top talent.

“A lot of the big countries like Japan and Russia all send some of their top guys so it’s quite a competitive comp and it will be good leading into worlds this year.”

Tone continues his 2019 Napoli Summer Universiade campaign in the pommel horse final on Sunday 7 July from 11:00 CEST (19:00 AEST).

Tennis – Kaitlin Stains (University of Tennessee) is through to the next round with a solid 6-4,6-3 win over Great Britain’s Holly Hutchinson in the first round of play.

“Right from the start I knew it was going to be a really tough match. She’s a great player,” Stains said post-match.

“I just knew I had to stay aggressive and play my game and as soon as I got a bit of momentum everything really started to flow for me.”

The University of Tennessee’s Scott Jones fell to Sho Shimabukuro of Japan 6-1, 6-1 in his opening match of the 2019 Napoli Summer Universiade.

Fencing – Three fencers were in action today in the men’s foil competition. Sholto Douglas (The University of Sydney) was the pick of the UniRoos, making it to the quarter finals despite a tough draw, for a 13th place finish. Edward Fitzgerald (University of Melbourne) performed well in the group stages before suffering a narrow 15-14 defeat in the round of 64 to finish 33rd, while Matthew Dall’Asen (The University of Sydney) also progressed to the round of 64 before being knocked out of the competition in 36th position.

Judo – Noam Tidhar (The University of Melbourne) got off to a great start in the men’s 66kg event, defeating Abreu of Portugal in the first round, before losing in the round of 16 to fall into the repecharge where he was eliminated by world number five Denis Vieru of Republic of Moldova to finish in 9th place. Liam Park (Victoria University) was also in action, falling in the round of 32 of the men’s 90kg+ competition.

Table Tennis – It was a tough first day of singles competition for the UniRoos. Antong Angel Zhang (University of Technology Sydney fell to Siqi Fan of China in three straight games, Sarah Tan (The University of Sydney) dropped her first match to Viven Scholz of Germany 3-1. Edward Belokopytov (UNSW Sydney) lost to Alexandru Miha Manole of Romania 3-0. Anthony Majtlis (Monash University) fell to Linfeng Zhu of China 3-0. Steven Phan (The University of Melbourne) fell to Paul Eugen Mladin of Romania 3-0. Madeline Goodsell (Monash University) dropped her first match to Caroline Tansaka of Sweden 3-0. Georgina Newton (University of Tasmania) dropped her first match to Yan Guo of China 3-0 and Joshua Ip (Macquarie University) fell to Bryan Ho of Canada 3-1.
