readThe end of Round Four of the 2025 New Balance University Basketball League (UBL) officially marked the halfway point of the regular season before finals rounds. Round Four saw twelve games played across two states, with the week once again delivering everything from nail-biting finishes to commanding wins.
Round Four began with Victoria University hosting the AU Waatu (The University of Adelaide) at the Victoria University Community Sports Stadium. In the women’s game, the AU Waatu made it two wins in a row as they staged a late comeback to overturn the deficit and claim a 56-50 win and upset the home team. The men’s matchup was a thriller that saw the lead switch up multiple times, as the home side held the lead by ten points going into half time, before the visitors closed the gap and snatched a one-point lead by the end of the third quarter. The final term was anyone’s game, but in the end, Victoria University secured an 87-84 victory at home.
Next up, USYD (The University of Sydney) played the UWA Maali (The University of Western Australia) at their Sport and Aquatic Centre. The women’s game saw the home side take control early and keep the away team chasing, as they soared to a 79-46 victory, maintaining their dominance this season. The men’s match saw USYD establish their dominance quickly and had the visitors playing catch up. The UWA Maali tried to close the gap in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough as USYD won 82-71.
The following games saw The University of Melbourne take on the UniSC Mari (University of the Sunshine Coast) at Nona Lee Sports Centre. The women’s matchup saw the UniSC Mari get back to their winning ways in a tightly fought contest, as they held their nerve in the final minutes to secure an important road victory 68-63 and bounce back into form. In the men’s game, The University of Melbourne delivered a dominant performance, defeating the UniSC Mari 105-69. The result keeps the Victorian side unbeaten on their home court this season, showcasing their offensive firepower and depth to secure a commanding victory in front of their home crowd.
The last matches for day one took place at the City of Sydney Basketball Association, as UNSW Sydney hosted the Curtin Carnabys (Curtin University). For the women, in their first away game of the season, the Curtin Carnabys controlled the game from the start, showcasing their strength on both ends of the court to secure a convincing 86-46 victory. The men’s matchup saw UNSW Sydney claim their first win of the 2025 New Balance UBL season in dramatic fashion, defeating the Curtin Carnabys 95-93. In one of the best games of the season so far, both sides went basket for basket in a thrilling contest, but UNSW Sydney held firm in the closing moments to secure a memorable home victory.
Day Two kicked off back at the City of Sydney Basketball Association, with UNSW Sydney taking on the UWA Maali. The UNSW Sydney women’s side secured their first win of the 2025 New Balance UBL season with a strong 76-51 victory over the UWA Maali. The home side delivered an impressive all-round performance, setting the tone early and maintaining control throughout to claim a well-deserved result at home. In the men’s matchup, the UWA Maali achieved their first away victory of the 2025 season, with a hard-fought 69-66 win. In what was UNSW Sydney’s second consecutive nail-biter, the home side once again found themselves in a tight finish, but this time they came up just short as the UWA Maali held firm in the closing moments to clinch the win.
The final game for Round Four saw USYD host the Curtin Carnabys at their Sport and Aquatic Centre. The USYD women extended their unbeaten run, defeating the Curtin Carnabys 68-57. The reigning champions were tested by the determined Western Australian side, but held firm in the key moments, showcasing their composure and depth to maintain their perfect start to the season. The USYD men’s team also continued their winning run to beat the Curtin Carnabys 94-73, impressing once again on their home court.
At the end of Round Four of the 2025 New Balance UBL, USYD have knocked La Trobe University off the top of the ladder to claim the lead in both the men’s and women’s divisions, with the women’s side remaining undefeated, and the men with one loss.
With Round Four complete, the 2025 New Balance UBL has officially reached the halfway mark of the regular season, and all eyes now turn to Round Five, which promises another action-packed week of basketball.
