New Balance University Basketball League: Round Four Wrap-Up 

An action-packed Round Four of the New Balance University Basketball League (UBL) saw twenty games played across four days and four states, with close finishes, 100-point performances and strong home-court displays.  

The round also featured Wear It Purple Round, Bring The Blue Round and a NSW vs Queensland state clash, as teams continued to build their campaigns across the competition. 

Round Four began at the USYD Sports and Aquatic Centre, with The University of Sydney (USYD) taking on the University of Newcastle. The women’s contest saw Newcastle come away with a 69-76 victory, before USYD responded in the men’s game with an 88-70 win. 

Over at Ross Milbourne Sports Hall, the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) faced La Trobe University. UTS put together a dominant performance in the men’s match up, breaking the 100-point mark on their way to a 102-55 victory. La Trobe narrowly secured the women’s game 66-70. 

A stacked day two started back at the USYD Sports and Aquatic Centre, where USYD faced La Trobe. The women’s game saw La Trobe claim a 55-85 win, while the USYD men took the match 87-61. 

Over at the Fed Sport and Recreation Centre, the Fed Falcons (Federation University) hosted The University of Melbourne. Melbourne produced a strong offensive display in the men’s contest, surpassing the 100-point mark to defeat the Falcons 79-110 before the women backed it up with a 59-89 win. 

At the UWA Sport and Recreation Centre, the UWA Maali (The University of Western Australia) faced the University of Tasmania (UTAS). UTAS claimed the women’s contest 63-74, while the men’s game delivered one of the round’s closest finishes, as UWA held on for a 69-67 victory to hand UTAS a narrow defeat. 

The action then moved to Pridham Hall, where the AU Waatu (Adelaide University) hosted Monash University as part of Wear It Purple Round in support of LGBTQIA+ young people, with 370 spectators attending across the double-header. The women’s game was a see-sawing contest featuring 19 lead changes, with Adelaide fighting back late to secure an 81-73 win. The men’s game was just as competitive, with AU claiming a hard-fought 72-70 victory over Monash. 

The final Wednesday fixture saw UNSW Sydney take on the UniSC Mari (University of the Sunshine Coast) at the City of Sydney Basketball Association, marking the first of the two NSW vs Queensland clashes for UniSC this round. UniSC secured wins in both contests, taking the women’s game 42-62 before claiming the men’s game 82-96. 

Day Three saw the Curtin Carnaby’s (Curtin University) face UTAS at Curtin Stadium. Curtin completed a clean sweep against the defending champions across the double-header, with the men holding on for an 82-79 victory in a close match, before the women fought back after trailing at half-time to win 92-84. 

At Ross Milbourne Sports Hall, UTS took on the UniSC Mari. UniSC claimed the women’s game 69-74, while UTS responded in the men’s contest with an 86-62 victory. 

Round Four then closed at Monash University’s Clayton Campus, where Monash hosted Victoria VU Vultures (Victoria University) as part of Bring The Blue Round. With the courtside area lit up in blue and blue-themed prizes, food and Monash merchandise adding to the atmosphere, 585 spectators turned out to support the home side. On court, Monash secured wins in both contests. The women’s side claimed a 72-54 victory before the men followed with a 93-78 win to complete a strong home round for the Monash teams. 

After Round Four of the 2026 UBL season, USYD has moved into top spot on the overall men’s leaderboard, knocking the University of Newcastle from first place. Newcastle now sits second. In the women’s competition, The University of Melbourne has moved into first place, with La Trobe University climbing into second. 

By conference, USYD leads the men’s North East Conference, while the AU Waatu sits atop the South West. In the women’s competition, La Trobe leads the North East Conference, with Melbourne sitting at the top of the South West. 

With four rounds now completed, the 2026 UBL continues to produce close contests and strong performances across the competition. Attention now turns to Round Five, with teams looking to build on their recent results.
