New Balance University Basketball League: Women’s Semi Final Wrap-Up – Melbourne and Newcastle Book Grand Final Places

The 2026 New Balance University Basketball League (UBL) Men’s Grand Final match-up is confirmed after two Semi Finals at the Nona Lee Sports Centre, with The University of Melbourne and University of Newcastle advancing to the championship decider.

University of Newcastle vs University of Tasmania

The opening Semi Final saw the University of Newcastle take on defending champions University of Tasmania (UTAS), with Newcastle looking to go one step further after reaching the semis in 2025.

Newcastle made an early statement, putting Tasmania on the back foot and establishing momentum in the opening quarter. UTAS responded in the second period, working their way back into the contest, but Newcastle maintained their advantage to lead 35-30 at half-time.

The match remained competitive after the break, with Newcastle continuing to hold their lead at 54-48 heading into the final quarter.

Newcastle lifted again in the closing stages, pulling away from the defending champions to secure an 81-61 victory and book their place in the Grand Final for the first time in the university’s UBL history, after just their second year in the league.

The University of Melbourne vs The University of Sydney

The second Semi Final brought together The University of Melbourne and The University of Sydney (USYD), with Sydney looking to return to the Grand Final after finishing as runners-up in 2025, while Melbourne sought to progress beyond last year’s semis stage.

USYD started strongly, taking a 14-21 lead at the end of the opening quarter. Melbourne responded in the second, turning the contest around in a closely fought period to take a narrow 37-36 advantage into half-time.

Melbourne carried that momentum into the third quarter, extending their lead to 63-52, beginning to create separation on the scoreboard.

With a Grand Final place within reach, Melbourne maintained their pressure in the fourth period to close out an 81-68 win over USYD and secure the second spot in the 2026 UBL Men’s Grand Final.
