Professor The Honourable Bill Shorten became Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Canberra in January 2025, following a distinguished career that included leadership roles with the Australian Workers’ Union and 18 years in federal politics, including six years as Leader of the Opposition.
A strong advocate for the transformative power of education, Professor Shorten joined the University of Canberra at a pivotal time for both the institution and the broader higher education sector. He sees this period of change as an opportunity to strengthen the University’s impact and position it for future success.
As Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shorten is working alongside students, staff and stakeholders to shape a modern Australian university that not only responds to society’s needs but anticipates them. His vision is centred on ensuring higher education remains accessible, relevant and responsive to the changing expectations of students and employers.
Professor Shorten is committed to creating an outstanding student experience, recognising the unique challenges facing today’s learners. He believes universities play a critical role in supporting student wellbeing, fostering belonging, and equipping graduates with the skills and experiences needed to thrive in an evolving workforce.
In addition to his role at the University of Canberra, Bill will now serve as Chair of UniSport Australia, supporting the organisation’s mission to enhance student wellbeing, leadership, connection and educational outcomes through sport and active recreation.
