The University of Queensland (UQ) have defeated University of Technology Sydney (UTS) 21 points to 17 to take out the first round of the AON Uni 7’s competition in Brisbane.

Playing on home soil for the first time, UQ never looked troubled across the weekend reaching the Gold Medal match undefeated and they ensured this didn’t change.

UTS got out to an early lead however in the moments before half time, UTS had a player sent to the sin bin for intentionally knocking the ball down in what would prove to be a try saving move.

The resistance was short lived however as UQ piled on two quick tries, taking full advantage of the overlap.

A converted try in the dying minutes however wouldn’t be enough for UTS as UQ held on to secure the gold medal heading into round two at Bond University in a fortnights time.

Newcomers UTS can certainly hold their heads high and will no doubt look go one better at the next installment.

Heading into the final day, both Griffith University and UQ were undefeated, topping their respective pools along the way - perhaps showing greater resilience to the unseasonably warm weather Brisbane experienced over the weekend.

Both sides held true until the knockout phase of the competition, when Griffith came up against eventual runners up UTS, going down 22 – 17 in the process.

Griffith then bowed out to USYD who took out bronze in the bronze medal playoff.

UQ faced off with USYD in the second semi final and were made to work hard for their result, hanging on to win 10 – 5 after USYD scored in the dying minutes of the game.
