With the 2025 UniSport Swimming Nationals x Sydney Open just around the corner, the excitement is building, and all eyes are on Bond University. As the reigning champions for three consecutive years (2022-2024), Bond is looking to defend their crown in style this May. But their secret weapon? A powerhouse combination of elite athletes and superb university support.
UniSport caught up with two of Bond’s stars, Hannah Casey and Josh Collett, student-athletes who represent everything UniSport Nationals stand for: passion, performance, and the perfect balance of sport and study.
Hannah Casey, Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Sciences
Hannah is taking on a mammoth schedule at Nationals, competing in the 50m, 100m, 200m, and 400m freestyle, along with the 50m butterfly. Behind her impressive swimming program is a relentless drive that extends well beyond the pool.
“As a student-athlete it can be hard balancing both study and sporting aspirations,” Hannah admits, “but with the unmatched support provided at Bond University, I’m able to pursue both my academic and athletic goals.”
Through mentorship, academic flexibility, and tailored support from Bond’s Elite Sport Program, Hannah can focus on her training without compromising her studies.
“The discipline, resilience and work ethic built in sport definitely carry over into the classroom,” she says. “You learn to manage time, stay focused, and push through, even when it means a late-night study session before an exam.”
Joshua Collett, Bachelor of Biomedical Science

Fellow Bond swimmer Josh Collett will dive into the 50m, 100m, and 200m breaststroke events, as well as the team relays at this year’s Nationals Swimming Championship. With dreams of qualifying for the Australian team later this year, Josh is currently training at full throttle and Bond University is right beside him, every stroke he makes.
“The support from Bond via the Elite Sport Program, especially director Hayley Martin, is every reason why I can pursue both swimming and academics,” Josh shares. “Right now, I’m studying part-time so I can prepare for Australian Trials in June. It’s been ideal to have this flexibility based on how busy the swimming calendar is.”
For Josh, swimming has not only shaped his body, but it has also sharpened his mind.
“Swimming teaches discipline and mental fortitude,” he explains. “Those qualities transfer to anything, including studying. I’ve learned how to work hard, stay focused, and push beyond what I thought was possible.”
Bond’s Formula for Success
Bond University’s Elite Sport Program is a standout example of how Australian universities can empower student-athletes to thrive in and out of the pool. With tailored academic pathways, mentoring, and the backing of dedicated staff, Bond athletes are proof that excellence in sport and education can go hand-in-hand.
As Swimming Nationals hosted at the Sydney Open approach, Bond will enter the pool as defending champions. But are you ready to stand up to their challenge? Reach out to your University Team Manager today to check your eligibility.
