QUT announced as hosts of 2022 Indigenous Nationals presented by bp

Following the successful 2021 Indigenous Nationals competition, UniSport and the Wollotuka Institute are delighted to announce the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) will host the event in 2022.

Indigenous Nationals was established in 1996 by the Wollotuka Institute and the University of Newcastle and has since been supported by UniSport Australia (UniSport), bringing together Indigenous students and staff from across Australia.

UniSport CEO, Mark Sinderberry says he is excited about the opportunity this presents Indigenous university students.

“UniSport is extremely pleased with the decision made for QUT to host Indigenous Nationals in 2022,” says Mark.

“QUT’s history as competitors at the event and commitment to sport for Indigenous students will create a high-quality sporting event prioritising health and wellbeing, and social connectedness within the community and amongst participants.”

QUT Pro-Vice Chancellor (Indigenous Strategy), Angela Barney-Leitch is pleased to secure the hosting rights for the 26th Indigenous Nationals in the sunshine state.

“QUT is extremely pleased to be host of the Indigenous Nationals in 2022. QUT has a long history as competitors in the Indigenous Nationals but this will be our first time as host. Through our existing partnership with the Institute for Urban Indigenous Health and their nationally recognised ‘Deadly Choices’ brand QUT will aim to deliver a high-quality sporting event which prioritises health and wellbeing, and social connectedness amongst participants and within the community.”

Gregory Egert, QUT Elder-in-residence, further expressed the celebration of culture this event brings to Indigenous Australians.

“As a Traditional Owner of the land on which QUT is situated, I look forward to welcoming everyone to my Country – the lands of the Turrabal and Yugara people. This event will present an opportunity for us to share and celebrate our culture together as Indigenous Australians from across the nation.”

The event was last hosted in Queensland in 2016 and QUT looks forward to welcoming it back in late June of 2022.
