Teams still in the mix for finals at the end of week six

With a bye round in week five, the USC Spartans hosted Victoria University to tip off week six of the UBL competition. The USC Spartans capitalised on home court advantage to win the women’s match 84-74.

Determined to make their mark, Victoria University fought for victory in the men’s match 82-73. A commendable performance from #9 Erik Kafritsas (Bachelor of Business) of Victoria University scoring an impressive 28 points and 16 rebounds.

The dominance of the Curtin Uni Carnabys was displayed in the match up against AU Waatu. Akim Lual #22 (Health Science) of the Curtin Uni Carnabys stole the show with a top score of 31 points, seven rebounds and five steals to secure the astounding three-digit score 105-35.

AU Waatu claimed victory in a much closer match in the men’s game with a result of 82-66.

The concluding matches of day one saw the visiting teams from UTS claiming back-to-back victories over RMIT men 93-63 and RMIT women 103-48.

Special mention to #11 Archer Woodhill (Bachelor of Property Economics) with 28 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks for the UTS men’s team.

Heading into the second day of round six was the highly anticipated match-up between powerhouses La Trobe University and UTS. Off the back of a strong win the day prior, the UTS men’s team battled with La Trobe University from tip off but finished 11 points ahead 61-50.

Proving an absolute nailbiter, the women’s game was thrust into a thrilling overtime at 68-68, with the eventual winners La Trobe University holding the visitors out 82-78.

Hoping to clutch victory, home team RMIT women faced the united strength of UWA Maali. Having their work cut out for them, the women’s match went in UWA Maali’s favour 61-48 with solid offense by UWA Maali’s #32 Jenna Teasdale (Bachelor of Philosophy – Anatomy and Human Biology and Science Communication) scoring 19 points and 10 rebounds for the winning side.

The men’s match was neck and neck the entire way, with both teams showing outstanding endurance. UWA Maali were able to seal the win against a strong RMIT

side 71-66.

Back on the Sunshine Coast, USC Spartans took on The University of Melbourne with the dominance of the USC Spartans women giving them the lead from the start with a final score of 76-54. The University of Melbourne men finished strong against a defensive USC Spartans with a 95-79 win.

The final two matches on day two also proved exciting with AU Waatu displaying their dominance over the Fed Falcons in the men’s match 93-71. #5 Lachlan Hunter (Bachelor of Civil Engineering) was incredible with 31 points, 19 rebounds and 4 assists for the AU Waatu team.

Fed Falcons’ #8 Layla Iglesias (Master of Teaching) lifted her team with 19 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists to secure the win for Fed Falcons over AU Waatu 65-60 in another close game.

La Trobe University women continued their winning streak in the league with a 46-point victory over UWA Maali, winning 87-41 and closing in on a spot in the final four. The men’s team was a tough match with the travelling team from Perth, UWA Maali, clinching victory 82-73 over the La

Trobe men.

Fed Falcons welcomed The University of Sydney to their Ballarat Stadium to round out the week’s matches. The University of Sydney continued to impress with strong wins for both teams, the men’s team winning 121-48 and the women finishing 84-38 over the Fed Falcons.

With only two weeks before the 2022 UBL finals commence all positions at the top of the ladder are up for grabs so teams will be working hard to secure a top four position in order to progress to the UBL finals series.
