The University of Sydney crowned Nationals Champions

After seven days of competition in Perth, Western Australia, UniSport Australia (UniSport) today has crowned The University of Sydney (USYD) (Eora) the overall national champions for 2022, after the Sydney student-athletes won 16 pennants to top the leader board.

The 2022 UniSport Nationals in Perth was the last event on the national program for the year to complete the full return of university sport after the global pandemic.

The overall champion title included eight individual national championships throughout 2022 and culminated in the UniSport Nationals in Perth this week. This week 5000 student-athletes representing 39 member universities competed across twenty-six sports.

UniSport Chief Executive Officer, Mark Sinderberry paid tribute to all participants for the spirit in which they played the seven days of competition. “Congratulations to all competing teams, universities and officials on a great week of competition, in particular, congratulations to USYD for winning the overall champions title,” Sinderberry said.

Sinderberry acknowledges to contribution of the Perth sporting community and all their volunteers for embracing the event to make the event a success and positive experience for all the interstate student-athletes.

Sydney Uni Sport and Fitness (SUSF) Chief Executive Officer Ed Smith was thrilled with the performance of his athletes. “Sydney Uni Sport and Fitness proudly congratulates and thanks our 300-plus students, coaches, UTMs and staff for their extraordinary efforts and commitment to our 2022 intervarsity campaign.”

“SUSF also thanks the University of Sydney for its ongoing support and UniSport and our Western Australian universities for hosting such a great experience for thousands of students.” Smith said.

The other major awards presented at the closing function were the John White Spirit Award won by Western Sydney University and the Doug Ellis Per Capita Award won by Bond University. Congratulations to both universities.

UniSport would like to acknowledge our major event partner, Tourism Western Australia for their considerable support in delivering the event. Curtin University (Nyungar) and The University of Western Australia (Whadjuk-Noongar) for their partnership and facilities and our event partners, City of Perth, City of Joondalup, and the City of Wanneroo for their support.
