UBL gives students an off-court advantage

Now into its third season, the University Basketball League Australia (UBL) continues to bring more to university life than just the on-court sporting opportunity. Each of the thirteen participating universities work with university faculties to provide work integrated learning, internships and work experience across areas such as high performance sport, physical preparation, physiotherapy, sports management and game day logistics such as audio-visual, commentary, media and livestream production.

Mark Sinderberry, UniSport Australia CEO says “Not only is the UBL a great opportunity for players to be involved in a national tournament dedicated to university students but there are also many valuable opportunities for students to gain experience and advance their future careers in line with their university studies”.

The University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) student Justine Dunsmore is just one of more than fifty students gaining valuable work experience through the UBL. Justine has been working with the UniSC teams managing their audio at home games since their inaugural home game in 2021.

In her third and final year of a Bachelor of Creative Industries degree, Justine became involved in the UBL back in 2021 when the UniSC team recruited students from the Faculty of Music. Being involved in the UBL has given Justine several opportunities to gain hands on experience working in the event environment.

In just her first year being involved in the UBL, Justine was offered a paid role supporting the Rip City Basketball Association managing the audio for their NBL1 home games – a role that has continued over the past three seasons. Justine was also offered a paid role managing audio and music at the PacificAUS Sports Netball Series.

The breadth of opportunities arising from the initial involvement with the UBL also extended to an invitation to shadow Aeroshot staff and their work with the Sunshine Coast Lightning.

“The opportunity to shadow professionals managing game day visuals and managing live music in the UBL home games has provided me with hands on experience in another line of work but a role similar to what I am aiming for after I graduate.

“It is one of my life goals to work at the Olympics so these opportunities to work and experience the sporting and major events environment I hope will give me an advantage and lead to involvement with the 2032 Brisbane Olympics”.
