UniSport Australia to receive a funding boost through the Together More Active funding

UniSport Australia is delighted to announce that it has received funding from the Sport and Recreation Victoria’s Together More Active program for the next two years. Under the program, UniSport Australia will deliver three projects to its university membership, whichencapsulates the dynamic needs of the sector.

CEO, Mark Sinderberry was thrilled with the decision of Sport and Recreation Victoria to fund UniSport Australia programs. “UniSport is committed to promoting healthy, active, engaged and well rounded university students. These projects celebrate diversity and growth in the university sport sector, building management capacity and increasing access to sport programs for all students. I believe these programs will improve our overall ability to manage our sporting programs, delivering a positive impact on student wellbeing which directly affects student outcomes” Sinderberry explains.

The projects are

Project 1: Changing the gender dynamic in the management of university sport

Changing the gender dynamic in the management of university sport program, aims to provide opportunities for females to take on leadership roles in the management of university sport. Leadership roles are not only in university sport departments, but also on student committees and team management roles. This program aims to provide opportunities not only for paid staff within the Victorian university sport sector, but for student-athletes that would like to pursue these opportunities.

Project 2: Training Future Leaders in Sport

Training Future Leaders in Sport is an extension of the Training Tomorrow’s Leaders in Sport program, however expanding to include not only future administrators, but also coaches and officials. The original program was created to build capacity of these students thereby enhancing the quality of participation opportunities for sport on campus.

Project 3: You can play

The You Can Play project will create a program that endeavours to provide a safe and inclusive environment for LGBTI student-athletes. The initiative will provide resources and participation strategies that current universities can adapt with the view to engage with the LGBTI student community on campus. Currently, there are nine university sport departments and 239 university sport clubs across the UniSport membership in Victoria. The key component of the program will see the development of a toolkit that incorporates best practice concepts for members to deliver on campus and in intervarsity competitions in relation to engaging the LGBTI student community in sporting activities.
