7 days to go before the Australian UniRoos take on the world!

The strong contingent of Australian student-athletes will start to arrive in Chengdu, China over the coming days as we officially countdown to the 31st FISU Summer World University Games from 28 July – 8 August.

After a two year postponement due to Covid-19, the Australian athletes are excited to be competing against international opponents from over 50 countries from across the world.

The University of Western Australia (Bachelor of Biomedical Science – Neuroscience) student-athlete, Giorgia Chin, will be competing in all four apparatus in the Rhythmic Gymnastics competition. Last week Giorgia said she was “very proud, very humbled, as not many get the opportunity to represent their country.”

Student-athletes across 26 Australian universities and TAFEs will be competing at the games this year. The University of Sydney will have the largest contingent, with 16 student-athletes competing, across Athletics, Fencing and Water Polo. Ten overseas based athletes competing in NCAA competitions in the US will join the UniRoos team in Chengdu as well as Fencer, Alexander Sells who is currently studying for his PhD in High Energy Physics at University College London.

UniSport Australia General Manager, International Programs & National Leagues, Siobhan James will be attending her ninth Summer Games as Deputy Head of Delegation this year. Siobhan visited Chengdu earlier this year and expects that the Games will be a fantastic experience for student-athletes who may be competing for the first time in an international multisport event.

“World University Games provides a unique opportunity for elite student-athletes to experience an event which mimics an Olympic Games. I expect that the 2021 Chengdu Organising Committee will create an event that will leave a long lasting and positive memory for these student-athletes” said James.
