UBL games in WA postponed, UTS travels to the Sunshine Coast

In consultation with the participating universities, UniSport advises that the round three University Basketball League (UBL) games scheduled to be held at the University of Western Australia (UWA) on Tuesday 4 and Wednesday 5 May have been postponed.

UWA Maali was preparing to host both La Trobe University (LTU) and The University of Melbourne (MELB) in what would have been UWA Maali’s 2nd and 3rd matches in the inaugural UBL.

The decision to postpone these matches is a result of the current status of travel restrictions for Victorians re-entering the state from Perth as well as the uncertainty and potential changes to Perth restrictions following a recent positive COVID19 case.

UniSport CEO Mark Sinderberry said “The first two rounds of the UBL have been really exciting so we are disappointed that COVID19 has had this impact on the UBL schedule.

Our primary focus however is the health and wellbeing of the student basketballers and team staff.”

UniSport will now work with UBL stakeholders to reschedule the UWA v LTU and UWA v MELB games.

Across the other side of the country, USC Spartans women will play host to UTS who have a win and a loss from their first two matches of the league.

USC Spartans played two impressive games against LTU and USYD in Round One to establish themselves as the team to beat in the women’s competition.

USC Spartans’ Francis Donders (Master of Teaching (Secondary)) will be looking to bring her extraordinary talent to the court as USC Spartans meet the formidable force that is the UTS team.

UTS players Nicola Sainsbury (Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Management) and Maja Jurlina (Bachelor of Communications) have impressed with their offensive skills and top scoring in their previous games.

The undefeated UTS men will take on the USC Spartans for their third match of the tournament and an opportunity to jump to the top of the ladder ahead of their NSW rivals USYD.

Reggie Ridlen (Bachelor of Science) and Alex Higgins-Titsha (Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Management) are a dynamic duo and will be looking to continue their fine form as we head towards the finals.
