UniSport Australia is thrilled to announce that Monash University will host the 2025 UniSport National 3×3 Basketball Championship from 27-29 May 2025 at its Clayton campus in Melbourne, Victoria. Delivered in partnership with 3x3Hustle, this event promises top-tier university basketball action and a pathway to international competitions.
3×3 basketball is a dynamic and fast-paced variant of traditional basketball, played on a half-court with three players per team and one hoop. With a 12-second on the shot clock and a game format that ends when a team scores 21 points or the 10-minute game clock expires, 3×3 basketball emphasizes skill, speed, and strategy. This thrilling format, which made its Olympic debut in 2021, has quickly become a favourite among urban sports enthusiasts and fans looking for a fresh take on the traditional game.
“The UniSport National 3×3 Basketball Championship continues to raise the bar for university sport in Australia,” said Mark Sinderberry, CEO of UniSport Australia. “We are excited to bring this competition to Monash University, known for hosting exceptional sporting events. This championship not only highlights the immense talent within our universities but also offers athletes a crucial platform to pursue international opportunities. We look forward to an exciting competition that embodies the passion and excellence of university sport.”
Monash University is equally enthusiastic about hosting the championship. “We are extremely proud and excited to host this event in 2025,” said Carolyn Gordon, Senior Program Leader at Monash University. “Following the success of the Indigenous Nationals in 2023, we look forward to welcoming universities from around the country back to our campus and providing our community with the opportunity to engage in this wonderful event.”
This championship will be a key selection event, with participating teams competing for a chance to represent Australia at the Oceania FISU 3×3 Basketball Qualifier, aiming for a coveted spot at the FISU 3×3 World Cup.
Building on past success, the 3×3 Nationals will showcase elite talent and fierce rivalries. The reigning champions, University of Sydney Women’s Team, will strive for back-to-back titles and another FISU 3×3 World Cup appearance. On the men’s side, the University of Sydney aims to reclaim its spot at the FISU World Cup after narrowly losing it’s sport to the University of Canterbury from New Zealand in the 2024 FISU Oceania Qualifiers.
Division 2 will also spotlight emerging talent. Victoria University claimed the Men’s Division 2 title last season, narrowly defeating The University of Sydney. While The University of Sydney Women’s Team secured the Women’s Division 2 title with The University of the Sunshine Coast finishing as runners-up.
As the University of Sydney eyes a potential clean sweep across multiple divisions, rival universities are preparing to challenge their dominance. With home-court advantage, Monash University is set to be a formidable contender, promising intense battles and a fiercely competitive championship.
Jaele Patrick, Head of NBL 3x3Hustle, says “We are excited to partner with UniSport for the 7th year running to deliver the 3×3 University National Championships. Each year, we see the 3×3 Nationals grow with incredible talent across the board. We can’t wait to see what the 2025 Nationals will bring.”
With stakes high and competition fierce, the 2025 UniSport National 3×3 Basketball Championship is poised to deliver an unforgettable showcase of university sporting excellence.
