CALD Sport Member Examples

The following page provides member examples of diversity, equity and inclusion programs related to culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) sport.

Curtin – Discover & Do program
AboutDiscover & Do is a free program for Curtin University students, funded through SSAF. The program provides introductory courses for two key life skills: swimming and bike riding. This semester is the pilot program.
The program’s target audience are Culturally and Linguistically Diverse students, specifically international students. We partnered with accommodation provider, UniLodge, to first publicise to students living on-campus.
Both courses sold out, and a second Learn to Swim session was scheduled and filled. We did not promote the program beyond UniLodge residents.
LEARN TO SWIM: partnership with Royal Life Saving WA. Participants receive a swimming pack (goggles, 6x swimming and 2x theory sessions (First Aid / CPR and Water Safety).
LEARN TO RIDE: West Cycle 4x riding sessions.

Status/outcomesLearn to swim has two sold out classes, with a total of 40 students in the program. Learn to ride has one sold out class, with 15 students in the program. The uptake in the pilot program has provided assurance for the program to be delivered and expanded in 2026.
La Trobe – Learn to Swim program
AboutLearn to Swim and Water Safety Education for international students across all campuses.
Water Safety Program (Melbourne & city international students)
10-week funded learn to swim program for international students studying in Albury-Wodonga, Shepparton, Mildura, Bendigo and Bundoora (this is a Medibank Funded initiative that also includes provision of swimming caps, goggles and $50 voucher to purchase preferred swimwear for each participant).

Status/outcomesOver the last 12 months, La Trobe Sport has helped in facilitating more than 500 international students receiving vital water safety education.

Status/outcomesOver 70 events happened during 2024 with over 1,500 students taking part in activities ranging from Archery to Kayaking.
UWA Sport – Western Series International Student Challenge
AboutUWA organises and runs this event, which is an opportunity for international and study abroad students from all Western Australian universities to play badminton, volleyball, soccer and cricket.

Status/outcomesIn 2025, 140 international students from three WA universities took part in the day. This event is a favourite amongst our UWA international students, now in its fourth year, it is enjoyed by all, high engagement and socially connecting students.
